Healthy housing champions

ABOUT

  • We are a group of Havenscourt neighborhood residents, trained to serve as health ambassadors in the community.

  • Our primary focus is on building community awareness and support for local policies that support better health through housing

  • We identify issues that affect our homes and community

  • We also work closely with community health clinics and hospitals like La Clinica de la Raza, Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, Alameda County Public Health, and Sutter Hospital to bring asthma resources to the community.

Advocacy Petition: Oakland Lead Settlement Funds:

Oakland and Alameda County received a $24 million settlement in 2019 from a lawsuit against paint companies for the harm from lead paint, but it took until late 2021 for Oakland Alameda County to come to an agreement on the use of the funds. Oakland received its first payment in the Spring of 2022. However, as of early 2023, nothing has been done to identify and eliminate lead hazards or even educate communities about lead in their homes. Meanwhile, every other jurisdiction that was part of the settlement has begun implementing a range of programs to eliminate lead hazards from their communities.

We are residents from throughout Oakland concerned with high rates of childhood lead poisoning and asthma associated with substandard housing conditions such as deteriorated lead-based paint, mold, and pest infestations. We are asking the City to treat this issue with the urgency it deserves and start using the funds to proactively identify and remediate unhealthy conditions.
